On this Little Cayman trip, the Atom Flash has been pulling double duty for me–I’ve been using it for both wide angle and macro.

The Atom is a smaller little cousin to the more powerful Hybrid Flash, but don’t discount the smaller size for lack of features or beam spread. It has the same modes as the Hybrid Flash, and if you take the Hybrid Flash and turn it down 2 clicks on the power dial, that’s approximately where the Atom power is at full. The beam spreads are almost indistinguishable from each other in practical use, making the Atom a great option.

For wide angle, I’m mostly running the flat diffusers to spread the beam to a nice, even . When I need a tighter beam, I’ll either remove the diffuser or swap to a custom beam restrictor we’ve been working on.

For macro, the OS-2 Snoot works really well and feels essentially the same as the original OS-1 snoot setup on the MiniFlash. If you ever shot the MiniFlash and Snoot before, the Atom will feel exactly the same because it has the same optics and the same working distance. It’s just that the Atom Flash has a brighter output and a quicker recycle time, making getting that shot a little bit easier.

I did TTL on occasion for both wide and macro and the exposures are spot on, even when using a snoot.
