GEAR TESTS: NIKON D810

Christian von Stentzsch Christian von Stentzsch

Sea & Sea

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Nikon D810 for a day. I spent my time shooting with the Nikon AF-S 105mm f2.8 lens. I was extremely impressed with the performance of both camera and lens. Sharp, quick focus made shooting a blast!

Using the SEA&SEA MDX-D810 housing and DX Macro Port 87, I found the system to be very comfortable and not too bulky considering the large size of the camera body and lens. The new ergonomic controls on the camera housing are positioned just right. All necessary controls are within reach. SEA&SEA's new control levers are molded to cup the finger, which makes finding the right control a breeze. There is no need to visually search the housing for the controller in need.

I was shooting with a pair of SEA&SEA YS-D1 strobes and SEA&SEA's exclusive Internal Optical YS Converter. The strobes are extremely powerful and provide great coverage when using the 100° and 120° diffusers. The Optical YS Converter provided spot-on TTL exposure. Just knowing that my images would be properly exposed for each shot gave me the ability to relax and focus on framing my subjects. Although the Optical YS Converter grants the option of shooting either TTL or Manual, I only shot TTL and loved it!

Our D810 housing was busy at the Shootout, heading out at virtually every opportunity. This housing is a very elegant refinement of our original D800 housing, adding the Nauticam vacuum electronics and losing a bit of weight from the initial design. The ergonomics of this housing are really dialed in, and we can tell from the number of upgrades from D800 to D810 that people really love this housing.
