Backscatter

This year at the Digital Shootout we had a new camera from GoPro, the Hero 5, along with the new FLIP5 from Backscatter. The Hero 5 features an all-new camera design with a built in LCD on the back of the camera. It still shoots 4K video and high speed 1080 120p. It does not come with an underwater housing like it did in the past and is waterproof to 33 feet without a housing. The new Super Suit housing replaces the old dive housing and is rated to 196 feet deep.

A series of easy-to-use adapters makes the FLIP5 compatible with Hero 3, 3+, 4, and 5 right out of the box. All of the same popular accessories such as the +15 Macromate Mini and other color filter options like the Nightsea and Greenwater filters are still compatible with the Flip5.

We had great conditions in Bonaire for shooting the GoPro with filters. Bright sunlight and great visibility led to some great results with the color filters. I used the Dive and Deep filters in the video. The Dive filter is good for use from about 20-50 feet, while the Deep filter is designed for use over 50 feet deep.

The GoPro Hero 5 with a FLIP5 system is a great way to get started with underwater video, or as a secondary camera mounted to your primary rig.
